Born in 2002 into a family of artists, Lyall Penley was surrounded by art from an early age. That environment gave him an early familiarity with the creative process, but his own work has developed through a strong interest in experimentation and a desire to avoid being confined to any single style.
Penley moves freely between painting, printmaking, stencil work, photography, and mixed media, allowing the idea behind each piece to determine how it should be made. His work shifts between figurative, abstract, graphic, and conceptual approaches, often combining traditional subject matter with unconventional processes.
Rather than developing one recognizable visual formula and repeating it, Penley treats each work as its own problem to solve. Some pieces are carefully planned and highly controlled, while others are intentionally raw, immediate, or process-driven.
This openness to different materials, subjects, and techniques has become central to his practice. The result is a body of work connected not by a uniform aesthetic, but by curiosity, experimentation, and a refusal to impose stylistic boundaries.
